SERFA Session: The Highlander Center, Cultural Organizing, and Social Movements in the U.S. South

This is a webinar hosted by the Southeast Regional Folk Alliance (SERFA) on the topic of Cultural Organizing and Social Movements in the U.S. South.  Since 1932, the Highlander Center has been a catalyst for grassroots organizing and movement building in Appalachia and the US South. Music has been an important aspect of Highlander’s work in the region, from Zilphia Horton supporting labor organizing through music in the 1930s, to the work of Guy and Candie Carawan supporting cultural organizing during the Civil Rights movement, to todays’ work supporting the We Shall Overcome Fund and Black-led cultural work in our programming. Candie Carawan and Elizabeth Wright of the Highlander Center share about this history, Highlander’s broader role in social movements, and what the work looks like today.
